City council approves first look at budget

The Washington City Council held a public hearing on the 2020 project city budged of $12 million. A little over $5 million will be generated by property taxes.  The remainder will come through fees and other sources.  The State will set the final tax rate, which City officials believe will be between $1.90, to $2.00 for 2020.   No one commented on the budget at the hearing.  The council approved the first reading and will make final approval at their next meeting then send it to the state for their approval.

In other business, the Council passed an ordinance vacating an undeveloped section of Florence Street in the Steve Wirts Addition off Jersey Street.   The land will be deeded to adjoining property owners, with the city retaining a utility easement in the middle of the tract.
The Council also set the official times for Halloween in the City at 5-8:30 pm on October 31.
