Washington Community Schools Assistant Superintendent Kevin Frank told the School Board Thursday that the transition to e-learning has gone smoothly and quality instruction is still occurring despite the current pandemic situation. Frank said that the work put in by the teachers and staff over the past two to three years to develop and train for e-learning has really paid off, making the transition to digital tools easy for the students. Frank noted that attendance, measured by student contact with the teachers, is at the same level as that of a normal school day.
Teachers are also available for phone calls from students from 9-11 and 1-3 every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. WHS Principal Steve Peterson praised teachers with AP students. Advanced Placement tests will be given after the last official day of school and the teacher will continue to work with the students during the summer until the AP tests are completed.
Administrators also heaped praise on the school systems food service staff. They have been preparing thousands of meals for students during the shelter in place directives. Also, the Board was told that Washington’s custodial staff had collected personal protective equipment and donated the items to the Board of Health.
In personnel actions, the Board accepted a letter of retirement from long-time elementary art teacher Cathy Danehy. The Board also accepted resignations from High School English teacher Kevin Kramer, and elementary teacher Jessica Medina. The next Board meeting is scheduled for May 21.
