Governor Eric Holcomb signed the executive order yesterday requiring Hoosiers to wear face coverings to slow the spread of coronavirus.
When Holcomb first announced the order on Wednesday, he said violating the order would be a Class B misdemeanor, but did make a point to say “the mask police will not be patrolling Hoosier streets.”
In a shift from what he announced Wednesday, the state and local health departments will be now charged with “enforcing compliance through education,” according to the executive order. Violators won’t face jail time or a fine.
State and local health departments will be responsible for enforcing compliance through education about the importance of wearing face coverings.
The executive order does not include criminal penalties for non-compliance. The Executive Order will go into effect on Monday.
