The Washington Girls Golf team hosted the Washington Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Country Oaks.  Floyd Central claimed the win on the day carding a 311 in the 18 hole competition.  Castle finished second at 317, and Bedford shot a 326 to cap off the top three teams.   Washington did not have enough for a full team but three golfers competed with Kenli Barber shooting a 109.  Barr Reeve also competed with scorers of 104 from Braylee Knepp and a 120 from Kaitlyn Wood.  Washington and Barr Reeve are back at Country Oaks on Thursday against Bedford.
The Big Ten football season is still alive, for now. The Detroit Free Press reported that the league was expected to cancel the season due to the pandemic. Big Ten officials denied that report, saying the league’s presidents have not voted yet, and ESPN reported that the league’s presidents will meet at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Tuesday to decide whether to proceed as planned, delay the season until September 26th or postpone until the spring. Indiana coach Tom Allen said a spring season would create a lot of challenges and he would have a lot of concerns about that move.
The Miami Heat jumped on the Pacers out of halftime and did not look back in a 114-92 win from the NBA’s “bubble” in Orlando. The two teams went into the locker room tied at 48, but the Heat used a 35-17 run in the third quarter to take control. Miami’s balanced attack was led by Jimmy Butler, who scored 19 points and also had 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. In the much anticipated matchup with Butler, Pacers forward T.J. Warren scored 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting. Indiana takes on Houston Wednesday afternoon before rounding out the seeding games with another game against Miami Friday.
The Indianapolis Colts announced Monday they have signed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth. The 6-foot-2, 305 pound defensive tackle spent the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints after signing as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2018. He has compiled 16 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery in 18 career games. Stallworth was waived by the Saints last week.
The Detroit Tigers earned their fourth straight win with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox Monday night at Comerica Park. Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones hit an inside-the-park homerun in the seventh inning while shortstop Nico Goodrum racked up four hits including a home run as Detroit handed the White Sox their fifth loss in six games. Detroit is 9-5 after losing 114 games in 2019, and is a half game back of Minnesota for first place in the American League Central.
