Purdue begins its NCAA Tournament run tonight against 13th seeded North Texas at 7:25 t at Lucas Oil Stadium. The fourth seeded Boilermakers are 18-9 and have advanced to the Sweet 16 in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments. Purdue 13-2 in the state of Indiana this season, and will lean on junior All-Big Ten center Trevion Williams. North Texas is 17-9 and is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 after winning four games in four days to win the Conference USA Tournament. The Mean Green have four players averaging more than 10 points per game and have the 10th best scoring defense in college basketball.
The Indiana Pacers will try to regain their winning ways tonight when they take on the Miami Heat. The Blue and Gold are coming off yet another fourth quarter collapse Wednesday against the Denver Nuggets. Friday night marks the first game between the two teams since the Heat swept the Pacers out of the first round of the playoffs in August in route to an NBA Finals appearance. The game is the first of a two game set in Miami, as the teams will match up again on Sunday.
The NCAA Tournament Round of 64 tips off tonight with 16 games at six sites across the state of Indiana. The First Four officially began the tourney last night from West Lafayette’s Mackey Arena and Bloomington’s Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Texas Southern came back to beat Mount St. Mary’s in a battle of 16 seeds to advance to play number one seed Michigan Saturday in West Lafayette. Number 11 seed Drake narrowly defeated Wichita State 53-52 and will play six seed USC. Norfolk State defeated Appalachian State 54-53, but not before Appalachian State came back to lead after being down 18 early in the second half. Norfolk State advanced to take on number one overall seed Gonzaga. In the night’s final matchup, UCLA came back to beat Michigan State 86-80 in overtime in a battle of blue blood programs. The Bruins will take on BYU Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
New Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz met with the Indy media for the first time Thursday, and said while it was bittersweet to leave Philadelphia, he’s excited for a fresh start with the Colts. The 28-year-old struggled in 2020 and was benched late in the season after throwing 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The former MVP candidate admitted last season with the Eagles wasn’t fun, but said that he plans on learning from the struggles.
