Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves earned 1.8 million dollars after his record-tying fourth “500” win on Sunday. Castroneves won’t actually see all of that cash, as the prize money will also be split between the driver and his Meyer Shank Racing team. The grand total purse was just over 8.45 million dollars, up from a seven and a half million dollar purse last year. Last year’s winnings were cut in half due to the fact that the race had to be held without fans because of the pandemic. Second place finisher Alex Palou (Puh-low) earned just under 650 thousand dollars for his finish. When Castroneves won his third Indy 500 in 2009, he and Team Penske earned more than three million dollars, which is a record for the 105 runnings of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. The beloved Brazilian became the fourth four-time winner Sunday, joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears in one of racing’s most exclusive clubs.
