The Cincinnati Reds continued their hot streak with a 10-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Joey Votto went 2-for-4 and drove in three, including a two-run home run. Vladimir Gutierrez won his third straight start after striking out six over six innings. The Reds bullpen combined for three no-hit innings and six more strikeouts, and Cincinnati has won four in a row. In St. Louis, the Cardinals scored twice in the eighth inning and defeated the Miami Marlins 4-2. Tyler O’Neill broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double, and St. Louis ended a three-game losing streak.
The Chicago Cubs had a five-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets in Queens. The Mets scored three runs off of Jake Arrieta in the fourth inning and added one run in each the fifth and sixth innings. The Cubs’ lone runs came on back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh from Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom. With the homer, Wisdom has gone deep nine times in 20 games. Despite the loss, Chicago remained tied with the Brewers atop the NL Central.
The Notre Dame baseball team saw its NCAA Tournament run come one game short of a College World Series berth after an 11-7 loss to Mississippi State Monday night. The Bulldogs advanced to Omaha for the third straight season by jumping on the Fighting Irish early in the deciding Game 3 of the NCAA Super Regional in Starkville.
