Tyler Mahle struck out a career-high 12, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Brewers 2-1 to complete a three-game sweep in Milwaukee. Tucker Barnhart drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh inning to score Joey Votto. The Reds have won six in a row and are two games back of both the Brewers and the Cubs for the lead in the NL Central. The Cardinals beat the Marlins on a walk-off for the second straight day. Yadier Molina’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth scored Paul Goldschmidt as St. Louis finished off the season series sweep of Miami.
The Chicago White Sox have the best record in baseball. Yasmani Grandal drove a single off the wall in the bottom of the 10th inning to bring home Andrew Vaughn and give the Sox an 8-7 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.. Chicago has won six out of seven to improve to 43-25. The Rays overcame a 7-2 deficit to force extras, but could not complete the comeback in the rubber match of the three-game set. Cleveland kept pace in the AL Central with an 8-7 win against Baltimore. The Tigers rallied in the seventh and beat the Royals 6-5 to sweep Kansas City.
The Chicago Cubs dropped their third in a row with a 6-3 loss to the New York Mets. Jacob DeGrom left after three innings with shoulder soreness, but the defending NL Cy Young Award winner was his usual dominant self. DeGrom struck out eight and was perfect through three innings before leaving his second straight start due to injury. Chicago managed just three hits against the Mets bullpen, including two home runs. The Cubs will try to salvage the four-game series Thursday night with Kyle Hendricks on the mound.
Former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen will make his IndyCar debut this weekend at Road America. Magnussen will substitute for Felix Rosenqvist in the number seven Arrow McLaren SP Chevy. Rosenqvist has not been cleared to drive after a violent crash last weekend at Detroit that sent him to the hospital. The 28-year-old Magnussen currently drives for Chip Gannassi’s sports car team. The Danish driver spent seven years in F1, and drove for Haas from 2017 through 2020. He was a teammate of Romain Grosjean, who is in his first season in IndyCar with Dale Coyne Racing.
Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm announced that three different defensive coaches will share co-coordinator duties this season. Defensive line coach Mark Hagen, linebackers coach Brad Lambert and secondary coach Ron English are all entering their first season with the Boilermakers under Brohm. Lambert spent the last two seasons at Marshall and will call plays. English was brought in after three seasons at Florida, and Hagen rejoined the Purdue staff after a stint coaching at Texas. The IU grad previously coached at Purdue from 2000 through 2010.
