The Cubs’ woes continued with a 13-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. The Phillies combined for five home runs, and scored nine runs over the final two innings to give the Chicago its 10th straight loss. Max Kepler homered twice, and the White Sox rally came up short in an 8-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Tampa Bay rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Cleveland 9-8. The Tigers have won five out of six after a 7-3 win over the Rangers.
The Cincinnati Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning to come back and beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. Nick Castellanos tied the game at two with a solo home run on a drive into deep left field. Later in the inning, Eugenio (ay-you-HAY-nee-oh) Suarez crushed a three-run home run to left field to give the Reds a 5-2 lead. The Reds have five comeback wins in a row to improve to 44-40. The St. Louis Cardinals beat the league-best Giants 5-3 behind seven scoreless innings from Kwang Hyun Kim.
A trio of Purdue basketball players are making an impact at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Latvia. Sophomore Jaden Ivey and incoming freshman Caleb Furst have helped lead Team USA to a pair of victories. South Bend’s Ivey and the Fort Wayne native Furst tied a team-high with 14 points each in Sunday’s dominating win over Mali. The United States takes on Australia Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Eastern in the final game of the group stage. Sophomore Zach Edey has been a force in the middle for Team Canada. The 7-foot-4 Edey has back-to-back double-doubles for Canada, including 14 points and 15 rebounds Sunday in a 100-75 win over Japan.
