The Chicago Cubs snapped an 11-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night at Wrigley Field. The Cubs scored three in the first inning on two-out RBI singles from Jason Heyward, Nico Hoerner and Rafael Ortega and added two in the second. The Phillies got to within three runs on an Andrew McCutchen homer in the sixth, but Chicago responded with a Joc Pederson RBI single and a two-run double from Patrick Wisdom. The Cubs regained third place in the NL Central standings after the Giants defeated the Cardinals 5-2.
Jonathan India’s go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Sonny Gray pitched a season-best seven innings and retired his final 10 batters before a rain delay. Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Tucker Barnhart drove in a run on an RBI single before India’s game-winning two-bagger. In Texas, Miguel Cabrera recorded a go-ahead RBI infield single in the seventh, and the Tigers went on to beat the Rangers 5-3.
Tim Anderson and Leury Garcia combined for seven hits and four RBI to help lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Garcia drove in three runs, including a two-run home run, and finished a double shy of the cycle. Lance Lynn allowed one run over six innings in his final start before the All-Star break. The Brownsburg native is 9-3 with an ERA of 1.99 heading into his second All-Star appearance. The Sox took the final two games of the three game set and now have an eight game lead in the AL Central over the Indians after Tampa Bay swept a doubleheader against Cleveland.
Another day, another double figure performance for Jaden Ivey. The Purdue sophomore scored 11 points to help lead Team USA to a 132-60 win over South Korea at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Latvia. Incoming Purdue freshman Caleb Furst scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Americans. Boilermakers center Zach Edey continued to man the middle for Canada. The 7-foot-4 sophomore had 10 points and eight rebounds as Canada blew out Puerto Rico 86-56. The United States will take on Senegal in Friday’s quarterfinals, while Canada will play Spain.
Purdue basketball received a commitment from Boilermaker legacy Myles Colvin. The 6-foot-5 small forward is entering his junior season at Heritage Christian High School in Indianapolis, and he’s the son of former Purdue football standout Roosevelt Colvin. Myles Colvin committed to Matt Painter’s program over offers from Indiana and Butler. He’s Purdue’s first commitment for the class of 2023. His father was a star defensive end at Purdue in the late 90s and went on to win a pair of Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots.
