Nick Castellanos broke a 1-all tie with a two-run single in the top of the ninth to propel the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds took three out of four from the Brewers and have won three in a row heading into the All-Star break. Cincinnati is four games back of Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central. The two teams will match up again after the All-Star break starting Friday in Cincinnati. The Cubs and Cardinals were rained out at Wrigley Field, and will make the game up September 24th as part of a doubleheader.
Adam Engel connected on a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning, and the Chicago White Sox held off a Baltimore Orioles rally with a 7-5 victory. The O’s forced the extra inning when Trey Mancini hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth. Andrew Vaughn homered twice for Chicago, which completed a three-game sweep and has won five straight. The Sox take an eight game lead in the AL Central into the break after Cleveland and Kansas City were rained out. Elsewhere in the division, the Twins beat the Tigers 12-9 in 10 innings on a Jorge Polanco three-run, walk-off home run.
Purdue guard Jaden Ivey helped lead the United States to an 83-81 win over France in the gold medal game of the FIBA U19 World Cup in Latvia. The South Bend native had a team-high 16 points to go with four rebounds and three steals, and Boilermakers freshman Caleb Furst added four points and four rebounds for the Americans. Purdue center Zach Edey led Canada to a bronze medal with a 101-92 win over Serbia. Edey had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks and recorded his sixth double double of the tournament. Ivey and Edey were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Fishers native and Hamilton Southeastern High School grad Sam Bachman was selected ninth overall by the Los Angeles Angels in Sunday’s first round of the MLB Draft. The 21-year-old right handed pitcher out of Miami of Ohio has a 100 mile-per-hour fastball paired with a plus slider, and had an ERA of 1.81 this past season for the Redhawks. The Chicago White Sox drafted Southridge High School’s Colson Montgomery with the 22nd overall pick. The 6-foot-4 shortstop led Southridge to a state title earlier this summer and is committed to play at IU. Pittsburgh selected Louisville catcher Henry Davis with the first overall pick.
Kurt Busch passed his brother Kyle with 24 laps to go and went on to win in the NASCAR Cup Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Kurt’s Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Ross Chastain helped Kurt take the lead and go on to his first victory of the season. Chastain was fighting to stay on the lead lap and stayed in the top groove, which held up Kyle Busch and allowed Kurt to make the pass on the bottom of the track. Martin Truex Jr. came home third, while Alex Bowman and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five.
The Indiana Fever defeated the Atlanta Dream 79-68 Sunday to win their third straight game. All five Indiana starters scored in double figures, led by Teaira McCowan with 21 points and 14 rebounds. After starting 1-16, including a 12-game losing streak, Indiana has improved to 4-16. The Fever used a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away. Indiana is off until August 15th due to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
