The American League defeated the National League 5-2 Tuesday night in the MLB All-Star Game at Coors Field in Denver. Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. crushed a solo home run in the third inning and earned the Most Valuable Player award. At 22 years old, he became the youngest All-Star Game MVP in history. Indiana natives Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson each pitched a scoreless inning for the American League. The A.L. has won eight straight All-Star Games. Cubs star Kris Bryant lined out to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, and White Sox closer Liam Hendriks earned the save after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
The final ten rounds of the MLB Draft took place Tuesday in Denver, and a number of players with Indiana ties were selected. Notre Dame alum and Granger native Niko Kavadas was taken by the Red Sox in the 11th round. South Bend native Riley Tirotta went to the Blue Jays in the 12th round, while Chandler, Indiana’s Zach Messinger was taken by the New York Yankees in the 13th round. IU slugger and Fishers native Grant Richardson got drafted by the Bronx Bombers in the 17th round, and fellow IU star and Yorktown native Cole Barr was drafted in the 15th round by the Seattle Mariners.
The Triple-A Indianapolis Indians defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers 3-2 Tuesday night at Victory Field to kick off a 12-game homestand. Indianapolis scored all three runs with two outs, including back-to-back RBI singles by Christian Bethancourt and Hunter Owen in the fifth inning to break a 1-all tie. In High-A, the Fort Wayne TinCaps came back to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-2, while the South Bend Cubs fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 8-5.
