Indianapolis Colts legend Peyton Manning will be heard in the broadcast booth on Monday nights starting this season. Peyton, along with his brother Eli, will be featured on an alternate broadcast for Monday Night Football over the next three years. The Super Bowl winning brothers will call 10 games per year on ESPN 2 as part of the MegaCast. The Colts play on Monday Night Football once this season, when they play at the Baltimore Ravens on October 11th to wrap up Week 5 of the NFL season. The MegaCast will feature celebrities, current and former players, and a host to be named later.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing announced that Santino Ferrucci will drive the team’s third car when the IndyCar season resumes next month in the inaugural Music City Grand Prix in Nashville. Ferrucci will pilot the number 45 Honda, with sponsorship from grocery store chain Hy-Vee. The 23-year-old Connecticut native has scored top-10 finishes in each of the four races he has competed in this season, including a sixth-place finish in the Indianapolis 500. Team owner Bobby Rahal has indicated that he plans on testing other drivers in the car and that he hopes to run the car full-time next season.
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-3 Monday night at Busch Stadium. St. Louis scored four runs in the fourth thanks to three Cubs errors, and added home runs from Dylan Carlson and Paul Goldschmidt in the sixth to put the game out of reach. In Cincinnati, the New York Mets scored five runs in the top of the 11th and held on for a 15-11 win over the Reds. Jesse Winker tied the game with an RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras Each team scored once in the 10th, with Cincinnati stranding the potential game-winning run on third base.
The Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins split a doubleheader Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field. In Game 1, the Twins scored two runs in the top of the eighth and held on for a 3-2 victory in a contest scheduled for seven innings. In the night cap, Sox rookie Gavin Sheets crushed a three-run walk-off home run to lift Chicago to a 5-3 win. Elsewhere in the American League Central, Miguel Cabrera drove in five runs and the Detroit Tigers crushed the Texas Rangers 14-0. In Houston, the Astros held on to beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3.
Four Indiana football players were named to preseason watch lists for a pair of prestigious awards Monday. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and wide receiver Ty Fryfogle were named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the best player in college football. Linebacker Micah McFadden and cornerback Tiawan (TY-wan) Mullen were selected for the Bednarik Award watch list, which is awarded to the best defensive player. Penix Jr. and McFadden were IU’s co-Most Valuable Players in 2020.
