Carol Darlene (Day) Purvis passed away on August 7, 2021 in Petersburg IN. Carol was born in Vincennes, IN on October 24, 1934 to Laurel M (Pete) and Estelline (Colegrove) Day.
Carol was very active as a young woman in Petersburg and graduated from Petersburg High School in 1952. She enrolled in Hanover College, was a proud member of the Phi Mu Sorority and obtained her BS in Elementary Education in 1956. More importantly she met her husband of 55 years, Jon K Purvis and they married on December 30th, 1956.
After College, Carol and Jon spent 2 years living up and down the west coast in California and Washington while Jon was honoring his commitment to the US Army from 1956 to 1959.
Son Kevin was born in 1958 while they were stationed at Ft Lewis in Olympia Washington. Carol returned to Petersburg in 1959. Jon soon followed and Carol started her teaching career as a second-grade teacher. She subsequently obtained her MS in Elementary Education from Oakland City College. Following a brief stint as a teacher in Bowman, Jon began his career as a partner with Carol’s father Pete, at the LM Day Oil Company.
Son’s David and Danny were born in 1962 and 1965 and Carol transitioned to a “stay at home mom”. Jon and Carol were very active in the Petersburg community. They were life-long members of the Main Street Presbyterian Church, and spent countless hours with the boys at Little League baseball games, extra-curricular events at school, volunteering, and family time. Jon and Carol always managed to find time to take the boys on wonderful family vacations, creating many life long memories.
In the mid 1990’s Jon and Carol relocated full time to their condominium at Eagle Point on Lake Monroe where they both spent several years managing the Mr. D’s grocery store in Bloomington.
Carol was able to spend several years in both Indiana and Texas after Jon passed away in 2012, and created many new memories with Kevin, grandson Jon Michael & wife Matteah, and great-grandchildren Azariah, Rian, Riley and Haden.
Carols heartfelt laughter was her unique calling card. She blessed everyone with that laugh throughout her journey. It will be missed.
