Adam Wainwright hurled six shutout innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets 7-0 Monday at Citi Field. Wainwright allowed four hits and struck out four en route to his fifth straight win and 16th overall victory of the season. Paul Goldschmidt drove in two, including a solo home run in the fifth inning. The Cards added four runs in the top of the ninth to secure their fifth win in six games. St. Louis is now a half game back of the Reds for the second wild card spot in the National League. The Cards are now even with the Padres at 74-69 after San Diego’s loss to the Giants. Cincinnati was idle Monday and begins a series with the last place Pirates Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Eastern in Pittsburgh.
