The preseason college basketball AP Top 25 was released Monday, and the Purdue Boilermakers came in at number seven. It marks Purdue’s highest preseason ranking since 2009 when the Boilers were also ranked seventh. Matt Painter’s squad returns every key player from last year’s team that went 18-10 with a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Indiana received votes and came in just outside the rankings at number 27. Gonzaga is the number one team in the country, followed by UCLA, Kansas, Villanova and Texas. Purdue is one of eight schools to be ranked in both men’s basketball and football. The Boilermakers’ football program checked in at number 25 this week after the Boilers upset then-number two Iowa 24-7.
A pair of Purdue football standouts were awarded by the Big Ten following the Boilermakers’ 24-7 upset of then-number two Iowa. Wide receiver David Bell and safety Cam Allen were named the conference’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. The Indianapolis native Bell caught 11 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. The 240 yards marked the second-highest single game total in Purdue history, and Bell has 38 catches for 679 yards and four touchdowns so far this season. Allen intercepted Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras twice to go with four tackles. The 25th-ranked Boilers are 4-2 and host Wisconsin Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue is ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2007.
