Washington’s City Council held a public forum last night to get the public’s feedback on a suggested change to current law that would allow off road vehicles to use Washington’s city streets.
A crowd of about 30 people attended the meeting. A vast majority were from outside the city limits. Washington’s Mayor Dave Rhoads opened the meeting by explaining that any change would most likely require the off-road-vehicles to meet the same requirements the city currently imposes on golf carts. Those requirements include head lights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, a seat belt for each occupant, a displayed flag, carry insurance, and the driver must have a valid driver’s license. As with golf carts the city would require an inspection and a yearly registration tag to operate on the city streets.
Everyone at the meeting supported the change. Most of those who spoke said they believed that ORVs were safer than golf carts and motorcycles. Mayor Rhoads said his main concerns were safety and compliance with the city’s requirements.
Council members reminded those in attendance that state law continues to prohibit golf carts and ORVs from State Highways and the city of Washington does not permit them on National Highway and at certain designated intersections.
The city council has formed a committee who will develop a proposal. Mayor Rhoads said the topic should be on the council agenda in November. The city will give public notice when the item comes before the council.
