Indiana has made big strides toward paying its teachers more.
The Indiana State Teachers Association says three-quarters of Indiana school districts now meet the union’s benchmark of paying all teachers at least 40-thousand dollars a year.
That’s nearly triple the number at the start of the year.
Washington Community Schools is among those working to pay teachers more as they recently gave their employees a bump in pay.
Despite the salaries, however, President Keith Gambill says there’s still a teacher shortage.
He says the union’s top legislative priority is to restore its right to negotiate over class sizes, health and safety standards, and prep time.
