The Purdue Boilermakers improved to 3-0 with a 96-52 victory over Wright State Tuesday night at Mackey Arena. Trevion Williams scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while fellow big man Zach Edey had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Caleb Furst added 14 points and 11 boards, which marked the first time Purdue has had three players with double doubles since 1977. Williams reached one thousand career points with a dunk in the second half. Brandon Newman poured in 15 and Sasha Stefanovic scored 12 to round out five players in double figures. Through three games, the Boilers are averaging just under 95 points per game. Purdue is off until Saturday, when Matt Painter’s squad faces 18th ranked North Carolina in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Connecticut.
Notre Dame pulled away in the second half to beat High Point 70-61 in South Bend. Paul Atkinson Jr. had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Irish to a 2-0 record. Notre Dame trailed by one at halftime, but opened the second half on a 25-12 run and outscored High Point by 10 over the final 20 minutes. Dane Goodwin scored 12 and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Nate Laszewski had 10 points and 16 rebounds, and Cormac Ryan added 10. The Fighting Irish head to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, starting Monday night against St. Mary’s.
The Indiana Pacers continue a three-game road trip Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons. Indiana scored just 10 points in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Knicks Monday night to drop to 6-9. The Pistons have struggled to a 3-10 start including four straight losses at home, but 2021 number one draft pick Cade Cunningham has improved of late. The former Oklahoma State guard had a career-best 25 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists in a Monday loss to the Kings. Pacers rookie Chris Duarte is questionable with an injured shoulder. Tip off from Detroit is at 7 p.m. Eastern.
Indiana and Butler both host major opponents Wednesday night at home. Butler takes on Michigan State at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Eastern, while IU welcomes St. John’s to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall at 9 p.m. Both contests are part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, a yearly series between the Big Ten and Big East. The Bulldogs are 3-0 after three wins over small conference opponents, and are facing the Spartans for the first time since a victory in the 2010 Final Four. Aaron Thompson will return for Butler after a three-game suspension. The Hoosiers face their first true test under coach Mike Woodson after beating up on a pair of Mid-American Conference opponents. St. John’s is 2-0 and features All-Big East standout guard Julian Champagnie.
