Washington has two new members coming to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. It was announced yesterday that Jerry Flake and Craig Neal will be inducted in this year’s ceremony. Jerry Flake earned all-state accolades in high school and All-American honors in college. Scoring over 1,100 points at Washington High School, he averaged 21.5 points per game as a senior in 1964-65. At Southwestern Louisiana, he totaled 2,058 career points earning 1967 NAIA All-American honors and 1968 and 1969 Small College All-American recognitions, He resides in Florida. Craig Neal has been involved in the game at every level starting with his time at Washington High School. A 1983 Indiana All-Star after averaging 27.6 points per game and leading his 25-2 team to the semi-state finals, he totaled 1,440 points in his Hatchets career. At Georgia Tech, he set school records of 127 games played and 570 career assists as part of three NCAA Tournament teams and set the Yellow Jackets’ single-season assist record of 303 his senior year. Drafted in the 3rd round of the 1988 NBA Draft, he played with Portland, Miami and Denver. , He was an assistant at the University of Iowa and University of New Mexico, was head coach of New Mexico from 2013-2017 and currently is associate head coach at the University of Nevada. Also joining Flake and Neal, are Gary Duncan former Southridge boys basketball coach, and Matt Painter current head coach at Purdue. The 2022 Men’s Induction Class will be honored on Wednesday, March 23.
Junior high boys basketball last night, Washington picked up a pair of wins at Princeton.
In the first game, the 7th grade Hatchets placed 3 players in double figures lead by Aiden Boyd with 19 Points, 13 from Levi Burkemper and 12 from Brody Armes in the 50-30 road win. Jack Brower also had 6 points on the night. Coach Fox’s 7th grade is now 2-1 on the season and will play at Southridge on Thursday night.
In the 2nd game, Coach Brown’s 8th grade Hatchets improved to 3-0 on the season with a 49-28 victory over the Tigers. Cordell Turner had a big night to lead the Hatchets with 28 points followed by 7 from Xavion Lesure, 5 from Brody Isza, 4 from Trey James, 3 from Cooper Wright and 2 from Brody Clark. The 8th grade will also travel to Southridge on Thursday night.
Purdue dominated Florida State 93-65 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Tuesday night at Mackey Arena. The second-ranked Boilermakers had five players score in double figures, led by Jaden Ivey with 18 points. The Boilers used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to extend the lead to 20. Purdue shot 59 percent from the field, including 12-for-25 from 3-point range. Brandon Newman added 13, and Sasha Stefanovic added 11 with three 3-pointers. Matt Painter’s squad is 7-0 for the first time in five seasons, and has won seven straight at home in the annual event between the ACC and Big Ten. Purdue is 7-0 and has shot over 50 percent in every game so far this season. The Boilermakers host Iowa Friday to begin Big Ten play.
Syracuse hit two free throws with 0.8 seconds left, and beat Indiana 112-110 in double overtime in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hoosiers overcame an 18-point second half deficit to force the extra sessions. IU trailed by three late in regulation when Khristian Lander was fouled. After making the first free throw, he intentionally missed the second attempt. That was rebounded by Trayce Jackson-Davis, who was fouled and made both free throws. Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers with 31 points and 16 rebounds. Miller Kopp scored a career-high 28, including three free throws late in double overtime to tie the game at 110. On the ensuing Orange possession, Joe Girard was fouled driving to the basket and made both free throws with under a second to go to secure the victory. Indiana turned it over 25 times in its first true road game under coach Mike Woodson. The Hoosiers dropped to 6-1 and will host Nebraska in the Big Ten opener Saturday. IU has lost six straight to the Orange after winning the 1987 national championship game.
Butler defeated Saginaw Valley State 68-57 Tuesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Jair Bolden and Bryce Golden led the Bulldogs with 15 points a piece. Golden added eight rebounds, as Butler improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 at home. The Dawgs led by 16 in the second half before the Cardinals clawed to within five with an 11-0 run. Butler responded with a 7-0 run of its own to secure the victory. Saginaw Valley is a Division 2 school, and two of the Bulldogs’ wins have come against non-Division 1 opponents. Butler is off until next Tuesday night when the Bulldogs play at Oklahoma.
The Indiana Pacers will try to snap a two-game losing streak Wednesday night when they host the Atlanta Hawks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Indiana lost to the Timberwolves Monday and have dropped three out of four. The Blue and Gold begin a six-game homestand against Trae Young and the Hawks. Atlanta has won seven out of eight, and has not played since losing to the Knicks Saturday night. The Hawks are 11-10 and coached by former Indiana head man Nate McMillan. Pacers guard Justin Holiday will miss the game due to NBA health and safety protocols related to COVID-19. Holiday has played in 250 straight games, the longest active streak in the league, but that will end Wednesday. The Pacers and Hawks tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern in downtown Indy.
Notre Dame moved up to number six in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night. The top four consisted of Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati, while Oklahoma State rounded out the top five. The Fighting Irish are 11-1, and the four-team playoff field will be unveiled Sunday following conference championship weekend. Former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was officially announced as the next coach at LSU Tuesday. Fighting Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick said he was not surprised by Kelly’s departure, and did not name an interim coach.
