The man accused of shooting a Clay County Sheriff’s deputy now faces formal charges.
42-year-old Joe Hoffman is charged with attempted murder and being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm.
Hoffman is accused of shooting Sgt. Brison Swearingen last Friday, after Swearingen and other deputies went to the tent where Hoffman lived and attempted to serve him with a warrant.
Hoffman is accused of firing one round at police, hitting Swearingen in the leg.
According to Indiana State Police, Hoffman had warrants out of Vigo County for auto theft, escape, resisting law enforcement, theft, and unlawful possession of a syringe. Hoffman surrendered Friday after a standoff with police.
