Purdue basketball dropped two spots to number three in the AP Top 25 Monday. The Boilers’ reign as the top-ranked team in the country was short lived, as Baylor jumped up to the number one spot, followed by Duke. Purdue went 1-1 last week, with a stunning upset loss at Rutgers and a come-from-behind overtime win over North Carolina State in Brooklyn. UCLA and Gonzaga rounded out the top five. Boilermaker big man Trevion Williams was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season and for the fourth time in his career. The senior All-Big Ten center averaged 21.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and five assists over the two games last week. Williams was one assist short of a triple-double in Purdue’s victory over N.C. State. Matt Painter’s squad is back in action Saturday against Butler in the Crossroads Classic.
Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said Monday that he expects center Ryan Kelly to be reinstated off the NFL’s Reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. Kelly missed Indy’s win over Houston earlier this month, but the bye week allowed him to miss just one game. The Colts placed linebacker and special teams ace Zaire Franklin on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Monday. Franklin was one of 37 players league wide to enter COVID protocols Monday. Franklin said during training camp that he is vaccinated, and therefore could return to the team later this week if he tests negative. Indianapolis hosts the New England Patriots Saturday night in a crucial game for Indy’s playoff hopes.
The Golden State Warriors scored the final seven points and beat the Indiana Pacers 102-100 Monday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Steph Curry scored five straight to tie the game, and Kevon Looney converted on a put-back layup with 13 seconds left. The Pacers did not get a shot off on the ensuing possession, when Caris LeVert lost the ball out of bounds with two seconds remaining. The loss snapped Indiana’s three-game winning streak. Domantas Sabonis led the Blue and Gold with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Curry hit five of his 15 3-point attempts, and is two away from breaking Ray Allen’s all-time NBA record for made threes. The two-time MVP ended with 26 points, and will likely break the record Tuesday night against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Pacers are 12-17, and head on the road to face the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday night.
