The Washington Hatchets 5th grade boys Black team improved to 9-3 on the season with a win over North Daviess Monday night 31-16. Drew Clawson led all scoring with 12 points. Hunter Newland and Dylan Stowers each scored 8, followed by Noah Rhoads with 3. The Hatchets Fifth grade boys play next at South Knox Saturday.
Purdue held on to beat Illinois 96-88 in a double overtime thriller Monday afternoon in Champaign. Sasha Stefanovic hit five 3-pointers and led Purdue with 22 points, and Zach Edey finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Stefanovic’s fifth and final 3-pointer broke the tie to start double overtime, and the Boilers led the rest of the way. Jaden Ivey had 19 points to go with eight boards, and Eric Hunter Jr. scored eight of his 11 points in the second OT to help secure the road win. The fourth-ranked Boilermakers improved to 15-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Number 17 Illinois dropped its first Big Ten game and is 6-1 in league action. The Boilers had a chance to win at both the end of regulation and the first overtime, but missed 3-pointers both times. Up next, Purdue will look to continue its dominance over in-state rival Indiana. The Boilermakers and Hoosiers matchup Thursday night in Bloomington.
The Indiana Hoosiers defeated Nebraska 78-71 Monday night as IU earned its first road win of the season. Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Hoosiers. The All-American junior has recorded a double-double in four straight games. Race Thompson added 12 points and six rebounds, and Jordan Geronimo contributed 10 points and eight boards off the bench. IU never trailed, but the pesky Cornhuskers hung around and never trailed by more than 10. Indiana is 13-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while Nebraska remained winless in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers return to Bloomington and will face arch rival Purdue Thursday night at Assembly Hall.
Notre Dame held on late and beat Howard 71-68 Monday afternoon in Washington D.C in the MLK Classic. Prentiss Hubb scored a layup with 12.7 seconds left to put the Fighting Irish up three. A game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out, and Notre Dame escaped with the victory. The Irish led 67-56 before a 10-0 Howard run thanks in part to four Notre Dame turnovers. Nate Laszewski had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Dane Goodwin scored 17. The non-conference battle was scheduled at the HBCU to pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Notre Dame improved to 11-6 and has won six out of seven. It was a homecoming game for Irish guard Hubb, who hails from D.C. suburb Upper Marlboro, Maryland and scored eight points. The Fighting Irish return to ACC action Saturday at Louisville.
Butler concludes a three-game road trip Tuesday night at 25th-ranked Connecticut. The game was originally scheduled for New Year’s Day, but was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the UConn program. The Bulldogs are coming off a 40-point loss at Villanova, the program’s worst loss in 28 years. Butler is 9-7, and has lost three out of four. UConn enters play 11-4, and has not played since an overtime win over St. John’s last Wednesday. After Tuesday night’s game in Hartford, the two teams will square off Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. UConn leads the all-time series 3-0, including a victory in the 2011 national championship game. The Bulldogs and Huskies tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern.
The Los Angeles Clippers fended off a late comeback attempt to defeat the Indiana Pacers 139-133 in L.A. The Pacers trailed by as many as 19, but scored 43 fourth quarter points to close to within three in the final minute. Caris LeVert led Indiana with 26 points and nine rebounds, and Chris Duarte added 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists off the bench. Nicolas Batum (Buh-toom) led all scorers with 32 points, which all came in the second half. Reggie Jackson added 26 points, including L.A.’s last seven. The Blue and Gold allowed 40 points in the first quarter and have lost four in a row and nine out of 10. The Pacers are 3-17 on the road this season, and have not won away from home since November 22nd. The Pacers can get comfortable in L.A. After a day off Tuesday, Indiana will return to Crypto.com Arena to face LeBron James and the Lakers as their five-game road trip continues.
