Rodney (Jay) Harbin 67, died peacefully on Friday, January 28, 2022, after an extended illness.
Rod was born on May 1, 1954 to the late James Russell and Helen Lichte Harbin. He graduated from North Knox High School in 1972 and entered the United States Marine Corps that summer. After serving in the Marines, Rod became a prison guard with the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he served most of his twenty year tenure at USP Terre Haute, IN. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and taught as a certified NRA instructor. Also, he was an avid cowboy action shootist and loved to teach people how to shoot safely.
Rod loved to cook for large groups; frying fish, making ham and beans, and barbecue in large outdoor cast-iron kettles. Rod’s memberships included; Marine Corps, League Post 1007, assisting with Toys for Tots drive, American Legion Post 073, Bicknell French Club, Single Action Shooting Society, Wabash Valley Sportsman Club, and many others as he loved to help others and stay busy. Rod was a confirmed member of Bethel Church of Freelandville.
He was preceded in death by; his parents, Helen and James Harbin; an infant brother, James Douglas Harbin; nephew and his companion, Joshua Harbin and Allison Rinsch.
Survivors include; brother, Stanley Harbin (Debby); sister, Julie Dehart (John); nephews and niece, Jim Chancellor, Adam Harbin (Julie), Ebony Kelly (Jeff), Kent Harbin, Jason Dehart (Erin), Heath Dehart (Addie); great-nieces and nephews, Austin Chancellor (Maddie), Joslyn Harbin, Nichole Chancellor, Mercedes Harbin, Russell Harbin, Samuel Grimm, Corbin and Gavin Dehart; great-great nephew, Greyson Chancellor; he also leaves several fond friends, neighbors, an aunt and uncle, and extended cousins.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at Bethel Church Cemetery of Freelandville, Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. A reception will follow at the church in their reception hall. Please make memorial contributions in memory of Rod to USMC Toys for Tots Campaign 122 E Jefferson
