The Petersburg City Council is proposing an 85% water rate increase.
According to The Press-Dispatch, the city council made the announcement on Tuesday during their regular meeting.
City leaders say the rate needs to increase to pay for the more than $17 million in water infrastructure improvements.
The increase would be for the water rate only and would not affect sewer rates.
The water system improvement project will include two new wells, well field improvements, a new water treatment plant, rehab of current water towers, and the addition of another water tower on SR 61. Water mains and raw water transmission lines will also see work.
The entire cost of the project is estimated to be over $21 million and will be funded by bonds, grants, and cash reserves.
A public hearing is scheduled for March 7th at 6:30 pm on the proposed rate increase. The ordinance will be up for adoption following the hearing.
