John M. Lyons, 92, passed away at 8:37 pm on March 8, 2022 at Gentle Care Nursing Home. John was born on July 21, 1929 in Vincennes and he was the son of Walter I. and Edythe C. (Morgan) Lyons.
John was a 1947 graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High School and 1950 graduate of Vincennes University. He then enlisted in the United States Navy from 1950-1954 serving on the USS Cambria during the Korean Conflict. After John was honorably discharged from the Navy he enrolled at Indiana State University and graduated from there in 1956. He taught social studies for twenty nine years, having taught at Dubois High School, Monroe City High School, and retiring from South Knox High School. John was a life long member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (Old Cathedral), Knights of Columbus, Harmony Society since 1950 where he was the longest living member, 40 et 8, American Legion, and the Elks BPOE 291. John was very active in his community and volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes University, Generations RSVP, YMCA, Red Cross, and the Vincennes Food Pantry. He received many awards over the course of his life but the three he was very proud of were receiving the Philip Shelton Humanitarian award in 2008, the Brute Society award through the Catholic Diocese of Evansville in 2012 and the Walter A. Davis Citation award in 2015.
A visitation for friends of John will be held from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Old Cathedral Catholic Church, 205 Church St., Vincennes, IN with Rev. Tony Ernst celebrating.
