Ross Chastain went from third to first on the final lap to win in the NASCAR Cup Series at Talladega Superspeedway. Chastain trailed leader Erik Jones and second place Kyle Larson into the tri-oval on the last lap. Jones moved up the track to block Larson as cars began crashing behind them, and Chastain stayed low to take the lead and the victory. It was Chastain’s second victory of the season and of his career. The 29-year-old has recorded a series-best six top-fives for new team TrackHouse Racing. Austin Dillon finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, Larson and Martin Truex Jr.
The Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 Sunday at Great American Ball Park to snap an 11-game losing streak. Nick Lodolo struck out seven and allowed one run over five and two-thirds innings to earn his first career victory, as Cincinnati improved to 3-13. Colin Moran drove in two, including a sacrifice fly in the first inning and an RBI single in the sixth. The Reds had not yet won at home, and had been outscored 68-20 over their 11-game skid. The Pittsburgh Pirates held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 at Wrigley Field. The win came one day after the Cubs trounced the Pirates 21-0, and Pittsburgh took three out of four in the series.
Byron Buxton crushed a walk-off, three-run home run, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 in 10 innings to finish a three-game sweep. Chicago has lost seven in a row after starting 6-2. The New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 10-2 to complete a three-game sweep. Gerrit Cole struck out nine over six and two-thirds shutout innings, and three Yankees hit two-run home runs, including Anthony Rizzo. The Colorado Rockies defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-2.
