The New York Mets scored five runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to come back and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead on a Tyler O’Neill 2-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth before the Mets stormed back in the ninth. A rare Nolan Arenado error allowed a run to score with two outs and kept the game going. Dominic Smith then drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single, and Brandon Nimmo capped the scoring with a two-run home run. Max Scherzer and Miles Mikolas each pitched seven scoreless innings. Scherzer struck out 10 and allowed two hits for the Mets, while Mikolas struck out five and gave up four hits for the Cards. New York improved to 13-5, while St. Louis dropped to 9-6.
Taylor Ward homered twice, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-0. The Angels right fielder clubbed a solo homer in the fifth, followed by a two-run shot in the seventh, as L.A. took the first of a four-game set. The Guardians managed just three hits off Angels starter Michael Lorenzen, and did not reach base after the sixth inning. Cleveland had a threat in the sixth after a leadoff double by Amed Rosario followed by a Jose Ramirez walk, but Franmil Reyes struck out and Josh Naylor grounded into a double play, and Cleveland did not reach base the rest of the game. The Guardians are 7-9, while L.A. improved to 10-7. The series continues Tuesday night at 9:38 p.m. Eastern, with Triston McKenzie listed as Cleveland’s probable starter opposite Patrick Sandoval for the Angels.
