Major League Baseball brought a buffet of late-inning fireworks on Tuesday night, starting at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals won in walk-off fashion over the Colorado Rockies thanks to a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the ninth. The Cards trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh inning stretch before coming back to win. In Washington, D.C., the Chicago Cubs and Nationals traded blows in extra innings. Both teams scored in the 10th inning before Chicago put up two runs in the top of the 11th. Patrick Wisdom’s leadoff double in the 11th scored automatic baserunner Wilson Contreras. Chicago originally saw a 4-0 lead disappear before the late-night win. The Chicago White Sox gained a full game on the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. Cleveland fell to the Detroit Tigers, while the White Sox crawled back from a 3-1 deficit in Houston. At the midway point in August, three teams are separated by just one game in their division. The Cincinnati Reds lost for the seventh time in their last eight games as the Philadelphia Phillies ran away with a comfortable 11-4 win in Cincinnati.
Another young IndyCar driver is off the table in 2023. Despite drawing interest from other teams, 21-year-old Christian Lundgaard has agreed to an extension that will keep him with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the foreseeable future. The driver of the No. 30 Honda sits in 15th in the points standings this season and just acquired his first podium at the Gallagher Grand Prix in Indianapolis. He also sits atop the Rookie of the Year standings. The details of the contract weren’t made public, but the team said they have restructured Lundgaard’s deal as a new, long-term agreement for 2023 and beyond.
Tiger Woods is coming in to save the day. The golf legend met with a group of the top 20 PGA Tour players at the BMW Championship to discuss how they could rally support around the PGA with the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf league picking up steam. The event is in Wilmington, Delaware, the host of the second FedEx Cup playoff event, which starts Thursday.
