Amber Alert – What Happened

An AMBER Alert about a missing 9-year-old girl has been canceled after she was found safe Thursday afternoon.

Public Information Officer William Young with Indianapolis Metro Police says their investigation into the disappearance of Delila Jennings led them to a building on the near west side of Indianapolis.

“And it led us here to the near west side of town, where we were able to safely, number one take into custody the alleged suspect. And we did find the young child,” says Officer Young.

That suspect is Monica Burdine, whom police say did not have custody of Jennings. Young says the situation started off rocky due to Burdine barricading herself inside the building and refusing to come outside. IMPD called in the SWAT team, Indiana State Police, and the FBI to help negotiate with Burdine. She eventually gave up and turned herself in peacefully.

Young says she did not have a weapon and that 9-year-old Jennings was in good health. She’s now with investigators, and Burdine is in police custody. Charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
